A neuroma in the foot commonly occurs between the third and fourth toes, causing burning pain, tingling, and numbness, particularly when a high heel or a tight shoe is worn. The nerve swells, and a permanent thickening develops at the site where the nerve rubs beneath a ligament. The treatment is to wear a wider shoe, with a pad or custom orthotic arch support to take the pressure off the nerve. If symptoms have been present for less than 2 months a single cortisone injection may help. If non operative measures fail, surgery to remove the nerve will often eliminate the symptoms.
