Tibialis Anterior Tendinosis
The tibialis anterior is one of a number of important muscles/tendons in the foot. The tendon has the very important function of lifting the ankle and foot up. Over time the tendon can undergo wear and tear and become painful, especially at night. Interestingly this condition is 9 times more common in women than men and characteristically affects those over 55 years of age.
Dr Beischer is the world authority on this condition as he was the first to describe this clinical condition and has also published the largest series of the results of surgery of this interesting condition.
Management is often successful with a custom medial arch insole however; surgery is required in approximately a third of patients who are diagnosed with this condition.

This MRI shows the Tibialis anterior tendon which is thickened and has features suggestive of a tear (the red arrow illustrates the tendon) |
This picture illustrates the Tibialis anterior tendon. A longitudinal tear was identified in the degenerate tendon. |
Possible treatments for a degenerate (worn) tendon include repair of the tear or augmentation with another tendon from the foot. The photo illustrates the transfer of one of the tendons from the big toe to replace the worn Tibialis anterior tendon |
